The Great Debate 2018
Pupils from seven partnership schools took part in our first 'The Great Debate' competition. The aim of the event was: to develop pupils' thinking skills which are essential for forming independent opinions and supporting these with sound, persuasive arguments; to develop pupils' speaking and listening skills and to improve pupil engagement in current affairs.
The competition was delivered in two stages with the top four winners from the two semi-finals taking part in a final 'Great Debate'. All the debates were held in front of an audience and were supported by two inspirational young men, Michael Bakare and Sean Sinanan, and a sitting magistrate from the Adult and Youth Courts, Mrs Page. Michael has represented Enfield in the English-Speaking Union's School Mace and is currently sitting on the Enfield National Citizens' Service Youth Board. Sean has won the Jack Petchey ‘Speak Out’ Challenge Enfield and has also spoken at the House of Commons in the UK Youth Parliament as a backbencher and represented London as a debate lead. We thank all for their contribution to this event.
